ASIP to Hold Protection of Geographical Indications Conference in Syria, Launches ACDR
AMMAN - The annual meeting of the Arab Society for Intellectual Property (ASIP) concluded in Amman December 30, 2010 under the chairmanship of HE Senator Talal Abu-Ghazaleh and with the attendance of members of the Board of Directors and General Assembly.
ASIP decided to hold a conference for the protection of Geographical Indications, Unfair Competition and the Famous Trade Names.
Dr. Abu Ghazaleh stressed that the issue of famous names has become one of the most important topics in the Arab region, and suggested to hold the forum in Syria next June. The Arab Center for Disputes Resolution on the Internet (ACDR) will be announced during the conference.
On the other hand, ASIP’s application submitted to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has been accepted to adopt the Center in resolving disputes concerning domain names (ICANN) in the Arab region.
In addition, the establishment of the educational committee was suggested to be headed by Dr. Omar Al-Jazi, and the membership of Judge Hazem Samadi, and ASIP Executives Director Mr. Mutasem Al Dmour. The committee will be responsible for the conference’s arrangement.
The election of new members of the Board of Directors was also discussed during the meeting. ASIP Chairman HE Abu-Ghazaleh suggested selecting new members from the Arab countries to be nominated by the Board members, whom have the ability and knowledge to contribute to the Society’s development.
Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh focused on the need to prepare periodic reports (quarterly) for the Society and its activities which have been held and send it to the Board members to be updated with the accomplishments. In addition, he proposed to prepare an annual report that includes all activities and marketing programs as promotional material.
Moreover, Mr. Dmour gave a presentation about the ASIP’s achievements during the years 2009 and 2010, including the preparation for the Moot Court Competition in the field of intellectual property in order to train and qualify law students on how to deal with intellectual property cases, cooperating with the Rule of Law Project to train Managing Directors of the Jordanian courts, participation in “Protection of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) program which was held in the US, cooperating with Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry and FERRING company, in addition to participating in various conferences and training courses and exhibitions.
