Abu-Ghazaleh to Inaugurate a Seminar on the “Cancer Prevention” on Tuesday
AMMAN - February 8, 2016 - Under the patronage of HE Dr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, the Talal Abu- Ghazaleh Knowledge Forum organizes a seminar on “Cancer Prevention” on the occasion of the World Cancer Day, presented by Dr. Sana Al Sukhon, President of Jordanian Oncology Society, Consultant, Hematology/Medical Oncology, president of the Jordanian Society of American Medical Graduates. 
The seminar will be held at 6:00 PM, 9 February at the Talal Abu Ghazaleh Knowledge Forum located at Talal Abu-Ghazaleh University in Shmeisani.
Dr. Sameer Al Kayed, a consultant physician on radiotherapy and Chair of the Jordan Anti-Cancer Association, will also join to talk about the Anti-Cancer Association and its role in the society, Dr.  Ihab Shhadeh, a consultant physician on the gastrointestinal system, will discuss the importance of nutrition to reduce the epidemic of cancer, in addition to Dr. Faris Al Hawari, a consultant physician on pectoral diseases and intensive care unit, and head of the Department of Pectoral Diseases at the King Hussein Cancer Center, who will talk about smoking and the importance of challenging it as a personal and national necessity.
This symposium comes at the time the World Health Organization and the International Agency of Research on Cancer (IARC) celebrate the World Cancer Day on February 4th of each year, in order to support the efforts of the Union of International Cancer Control (UICC), and to find ways to reduce the financial burden connected to the spread of cancer, where the World Cancer Day hopes during the period 2016-2018, and under the slogan “We Can, I Can”, to discover new ways for everyone individually and collectively to reduce the global burden of cancer.
Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary General of the United Nations, issued a letter on this occasion emphasizing that the “World Cancer Day, always an opportunity to rally the world, has special impetus this year thanks to the recent adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which aims to usher in a life of dignity for all people.”
He added: “We must work together to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health issue and to reduce the burden that millions face from all cancers. On World Cancer Day, let us resolve to end the injustice of preventable suffering from this disease as part of our larger push to leave no one behind.”
According to UN numbers, cancer is one of the leading causes of death around the world, as it led to the death of 7.6 million people (around 13% of the total deaths) in 2008, and it is expected that the number of deaths caused by cancer would continue to increase on the international level to reach 13.1 million deaths in 2030.
