On April 12 – 13, 2005 ASIP and the United States Patents and Trademarks Office (USPTO) co-sponsored the first symposium on Geographical Indications (GI) in Abu-Dhabi under the patronage of Sheikha Lubna Al-Qasimi, UAE Minister of Economy and Planning.
The overall objective of the conference organizers was to provide full technical support to the entrepreneurs of Arab local industries in the field of goods and services, in particular the geographically indicated ones. It tackled issues concerning the possibility of recording and investing geographical indications (GI) taking into consideration local legislation and international conventions effective in the Arab world. Furthermore, it examined investment by entrepreneurs in local industries of GI in the Arab world.
Dr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh announced the launch of the first Arab initiative to hold a series of conferences in Arab capital cities with an aim of reaching the fully-fledged picture about the position of Arab investments and industries using GI and to get an insight in the various sectors in order to set up the first Arab regional plan and mobilize support from the international competent bodies.
In the autumn of 2007, ASIP organized in Aqaba, Jordan the Second Geographical Indications Conference, co-sponsored by the Association of European Trademark Owners (MARQUES). ASIP is currently in the planning stages with MARQUES Organization for the event. The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will possibly play a role in the conference and provide speakers who are experts on geographical indications. The event will feature the major topics of geographical indications affecting the Arab World.
